Logarithm: The Ultimate Nonlinearity?
Abstract: The presentation will consist of three
parts. In the first, I will review our efforts on
modeling and understanding biological systems with mathematical
means. The primary tool for these analyses is
Biochemical Systems Theory, which is mathematically based on power-law
approximations. The second part will
demonstrate that the same type of representation leads to “canonical”
models
that contain virtually all-differentiable nonlinearities as exact
special
cases. The generality of this feature
has theoretical and practical applications.
The third part is a mixture of the two previous parts, where I will
show
methods of approximate function classification with the same type of
power-law
models
