1. Local shopping options
These are all within a mile of the Howey physics building, and within a few
blocks of frequent
Stinger buses.
Do not expect a huge selection of groceries or reasonable prices (with a
few notable exceptions) from any shops in this section, but most necessities
should be available.
North:
Along 14th street (go north along Atlantic or State, or use
the green Stinger bus) you will
find CVS pharmacy (just west of the Interstate) with all you could want
in terms of medication, toiletries, etc. at good prices, and also some
grocery items. A few blocks west of State St. is Salam foods (specialty
Middle Eastern).
East:
Across the Interstate, about three blocks beyond the MARTA
station (use the stinger Trolley)
is Midtown Food Mart, with more variety than a typical convenience
store (milk etc. but no fresh produce).
South:
Houston Bookstore Mall next to the student center,
is well known to members of CNS as Starbucks
Cyber Cafe, but also has the Campus Bookstore, Computer Store, Burdell's
General Store (mostly candy but a few groceries and other useful items),
hair salon and STA travel agent. The latter two are good value.
West: The on-campus shopping (The West Campus Market Place)
is easily reached by walking west on Ferst Drive. Then north on Hemphill
Avenue, turn left on 8th Street and the shop is next to the Curran Street
Parking Deck on your left (see item
139 on
the campus map)
or walk from the Callaway Apartment west on 10th Street and south on
Hemphill Avenue and turn right on 8th Street.
This shop sells fresh vegatables, fresh meats and all your daily
requirements - more or less - but no teabags for making hot tea!
There is the further caveat that the shop is hardly ever open, i.e.
shopping hours: Sun-Thu 10:00a.m. - 12:00a.m., Fri 10:00a.m. - 6:00a.m.,
Sat closed. The
web-site, however, states Sun - Fri 11:00am - 7:00pm.
2. Further afield
Full details on MARTA trains and buses including maps, timetables, links
to attractions (NB: for the zoo, use bus 10, not 31),
and discounts for multiple trips, are on
the MARTA website.
There is a shuttle bus stopping both at the Callaway apartments
and the Howey physics building (corner of Ferst and Atlantic) to Kroger on
weekends (at least in term time). Details
here.
On other days you could try another Kroger, two miles east from the department
at 725 Ponce de Leon avenue, bus 2 from North Ave MARTA station.
Publix supermarket
and also Walgreens pharmacy is located at the corner of
North (ie southern border of Georgia Tech) and Piedmont (about five blocks
east of the Interstate), quite close to the North Ave MARTA station.
They are happy to call a taxi for you.
has the greatest range and prices for food items. 3000 East Ponce De Leon
Avenue, Decatur. By public transport: take the MARTA south
to Five Points, switch to the east-west line, and get off at Avondale (E7),
take the 120 bus (no transfer required) for half a mile.
Lenox Square Shopping Mall
including department stores, clothes, gifts, etc. is at MARTA stop Lenox (NE7);
note that only half the trains running north from midtown go on the north-east
(Doraville) line. KMart (Lindbergh, N6) may be cheaper for many items,
but was apparently closing down when we last visited.
