I am interested in taking stat. mech. 2 this fall but have already taken it once before with Dr. Fox (fall 2002) can we still register for this course and receive credit or would it be better to just sit in?
Predrag's answer:
Ron Fox and I are using the same course number (rather than defining two different courses) on alternate years because stat mech is so huge that you should think about these courses as special topics courses rather than one monolithic stat mech course.
Ron focuses on stochastic and non-equilibrium processes.
I focus on chaotic dynamics, evolution operator formalism and chaotic dynamics fundations of non-equilibrium theory.
There is basically no overlap, and both approaches are worth learning.
If there is any formal problem, please register with me as a special problems student.
