Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is one of the leading causes of death in United States. In most cases SCA is produced by a disorder of the heart's electrical activity known as ventricular fibrillation (VF). A nonlethal heart rhythm disorder known as alternans has been closely associated to the onset of VF. This connection has motivated numerous efforts to develop methods for suppression of alternans as a way to prevent VF. Despite these efforts a practical control scheme is yet to be developed.
In this work we explore theoretically on a simplified model a new method for suppression of alternans. This method offers some advantages over the ones previously attempted.
